ROE GREEN WALLED GARDEN
Roe Green Walled Garden was one of the gardens selected by Brent to feature in the Britain in Bloom competition, and we are very proud that Brent won the Silver Award - one of only three in the whole country that received that award for the particular category Brent entered for. The Head of Parks Service has thanked us for our contribution.
Our Herb Garden has been getting overgrown, invaded by blackberry bush, lemon balm and mint. We have decided to dig it up and start again under Judy's supervision. We intend to plant a wide range of culinary and medicinal herbs, including herbs such as winter savory, (good for salt free diets), southernwood for the liver and digestion, (and for use as a moth repellent), and Indian pennywort, for leprosy and memory. Thanks to Judy and Kim for their hard work and to John for creating the border for the plot.
We recently suffered a break-in one Sunday morning. Fortunately we only had a single wheelbarrow stolen but the cottage was turned upside down and some of the locks were broken. It was a great team effort getting everything in order but amazingly we were back in business within few hours.

FRYENT COUNTRY PARK.
The colours during the autumn at Fryent Country Park have been wonderful this year - the hedgerows we have planted over many years also look really good, and help to show the history of the park, as the layout is the same now as 1590 - real living history.
Planting of our new young trees will be delayed until January as, due to climate change, many trees still have leaves on and nurseries are unable to left bare rooted trees at this time of the year.
During the autumn we have worked hard controlling blackthorn and scrub, to try to conserve our species rich grasslands. This should enable more species to survive.
We had a brilliant Countryside Day, the weather was wonderful, the pole lathe turned, the plants sold, together with books and bric-a-brac, and our Collage of Fryent Country Park grew visibly as time went on and more children added animals, plants and birds. This work of art is now on display at |Roe Green Walled Garden. It was a Great Day, with our really good team, and wonderful help from Brent's Parks Service
Kim
Roe Green Walled Garden is a WINNER at LONDON GREEN CORNERS award
Kim and I travelled to Covent Garden for the presentation of the '2007 London?s Green Corners Awards'.
The award was for brightening London life and enriching the city's biodiversity. It was organised by 'The Conservation Foundation' to celebrate their Silver Jubilee and sponsored by 'Capco', the owners of |Covent Garden.
We did not know what to expect but were pleasantly surprised to be greeted enthusiastically by Susan Hampshire and David Bellamy; both had been part of the judging team.
There were about 100 people gathered and we were all given huge cups of coffee and biscuits/cakes and then settled down to hear David Shreeve the director of the foundation, talk about the award. The representatives of Capco told of their intention to create green corners in Covent Garden and welcomed suggestions, no matter how small (even as small as a window box). The entries should be submitted by February 2008.
The awards went to all sorts of gardens, allotments and odd corners. As one of the winners we were amongst salubrious company which included 'The Dorchester Hotel' and 'Wandsworth Prison'. Three huge fellows resembling bouncers from a nightclub collected the Wandsworth Prison award (prisoners or warders?)
Our award consisted of a certificate, a beautifully engraved trowel, a resource book and £50 of garden vouchers. It was a lovely occasion.
And a photograph was taken of Kim with Susan Hampshire

First Aid
Safety is always important on projects, though the Group would also like to increase the number of volunteers trained in First Aid. Some funding is now available to cover one-day 'Emergency First Aid' courses organised by some providers, with a range of times and venues available. Please let Leslie Williams at Brent Parks know if you are interested. If there are a number of members interested the Group may be able to arrange for a trainer to organise a course for Group members.

We are now collecting old pottery garden pots and would appreciate any you no longer want.
